The purpose of this paper is to answer 10 famous myths about vision and mission
statements by analyzing the vision and mission statements of Top 100 Business Schools in
the world.
•First myth states that all business schools have both vision and mission statements.
•Second myth says that all mission statements must have nine components.
•Third myth says that leadership is out of the business school’s mission.
•Fourth myth narrates that research is out of business school mandate.
•Fifth myth articulates that business school visions do not concentrate on students.
•Sixth myth expresses that business school mission is more towards practices rather
than knowledge.
•Seventh myth states that technology is at the center stage of business school’s
mission.
•Eight myth says that business schools reflect their environmental concerns in their
mission statements.
•Ninth myth says that business schools reflect their social responsibility concerns in
their mission statements.
•Tenth myth says that faculty is the hall mark of business schools and reflected in their
mission/vision statements.
Methodology: FT Top 100 Business Schools ranking was selected for this study and
business school’s vision and mission statements were collected from their official websites.
Content analysis has been used as the major data analysis technique.
Findings: Data analyses using descriptive statistics proved all ten myths wrong. Further
explanation were added to justify the answers.
